Abstract

This paper presents the story of Joseph and Isaac Capriles, Sephardim from Curaçao whose unique trajectory marks a turning point in the premodern way of life and business in Curaçao. It is framed within local history with the use of primary sources. Both had to negotiate, internally and with their social environment, to balance the worldview that characterized their community with the new options of modern thought. They did not break away from their religious community, thus becoming figures of two worlds and two ways of thinking, which are reflected in their intra-community actions and their business dealings.
