Abstract

This study examines the actions and decisions that shaped the fabric of the diocesan administration of Santa Marta during the mandate of prelates Vicente Arbeláez (1860-1864) and José Romero (1864-1891). The analysis of the trajectories of these two bishops demonstrated that their exercise of power resulted in the institutional consolidation of the Church and in the defense of the Catholic institution against the implementation of liberal reformism. The findings reveal how the episcopal government was shaped both by the safeguarding of pastoral and earthly interests of the hierarchs and by the continuous shift of its management from ecclesial work to political participation.
