In the historiography of the Caribbean, the concept of "great fear" refers to the fear of an uprising of Afro-descendants after the Haitian Revolution. In this article it is reflected, from a specific case in the province of Yucatan, on the validity and use of that discourse of fear in the context of Latin American independence. Analyzing the dynamics of this case, it is concluded that, before representing a mental disposition of the "trauma of Haiti", the stereotypes of the discourse of fear were given a strategic use that should serve to justify local political decisions.
