In this article, we will provide a general overview of the origins, developments and most recent trends in pension matters in Latin America, based on a study of the main moments in the evolution of social security systems, particularly pension systems in the Region, within the framework of a relational and contextual analysis of the development of their economic and political process during the second half of the twentieth century, in the light of the deployment of the developmentalist model inspired by ECLAC, of its crisis and subsequent failure, as well as the emergence and implementation of the Neoliberal project, from which a series of structural reforms were projected and carried out, which we will study in the framework of the Neoliberal financialization process imposed on the Region in this area, to conclude with some reflections on non-contributory pensions in Latin America since the last wave of reforms and their impact on pension coverage in the Region.
