Abstract

The main topic of this essay is the treatment of nature as capital in Anacristina Rossi’s La loca de Gandoca. The analysis focuses on how the ecosystems of the Gandoca Wildlife Refuge (which is the protagonist and the space where this novel takes place) are transformed to turn them into merchandise. The product of this transformation is an artificial nature made for consumption. It is offered on the market under the label of “ecological” or “sustainable,” which is not necessarily true. On the one hand, in doing this, nature is legally sold in a nation-state that has created legislation aiming to protect it. On the other hand, nature is offered to a type of tourist interested in consuming it. This work concludes that Rossi’s novel, as well as defending the Gandoca Refuge, warns the readers about the danger of consuming nature in order to protect it.
