Situational Whiteness of the Francoist imperialism, Sacrificial Hero, and Racial Manicheism in Héroes del 95

This essay explores how Héroes del 95 locates Spaniards simultaneously on and off the margins of whiteness, exerting a situational whiteness that allows them to occupy the perspectives of both the colonizer and the colonized. Specifically, it is explored how the white imperial hero contributes to racializing Afro-Cubans (as well as white Cuban creoles, and mestizo Mexicans) through sacrificial and redemptive violence; at the same time, we will conclude how racial messages of hierarchization of the black body are encoded together with a totalizing restitution of the imperial identity that conceals all dissent.
