Abstract

This work investigates the role that nature plays in Pilar Quintana’s 2018 novel La perra. The following will start by briefly thinking through Domingo Sarmiento’s civilization/barbarism dichotomy as a way of revealing how during the 19th century nature’s primary purpose was to serve as a passive backdrop to be exploited by humans and their neo-colonizing mission. In La perra, Quintana interrupts this discourse and de-romanticizes the jungle by way of the ubiquity of violence and death. In doing so, one is able to reflect upon the supreme force of nature in a historically marginalized and underrepresented region of Latin America.
