LA VIRGEN DE LA CANDELARIA: FIESTA, IDOLOCLASTÍA Y COLONIZACIÓN DE IMAGINARIOS EN CARTAGENA DE INDIAS

Resumen

El presente ensayo se centra en los procesos históricos y socioculturales que impusieron los españoles en el contexto festivo-religioso de la Virgen de la Candelaria, especialmente lo referente a la lucha simbólica, la idoloclastía y la colonización de los imaginarios indígenas y africanos. Se muestra cómo, finalmente, la aparición de la Virgen de la Candelaria y su entronización en la tradición religiosa, constituye prácticamente una hegemonía del imaginario colonizador. Sin embargo, en el contexto de las prácticas festivo-religiosas emergen expresiones folclóricas (música, baile, gastronomía, entre otras), que hoy son parte de la resistencia simbólica de la cultura popular que, si bien destaca la mixtura étnica, también relieva la hegemonía de lo indígena y lo africano.

ABSTRACT

The current essay is focused on the historical and socio-cultural processes that the Spaniards imposed in the celebration-like religious context of the Candelaria Virgin; especially with what respects to the symbolic struggle, the idolization and the colonization of the native and African imaginaries. It is also shown how finally, the apparition of the Candelaria Virgin and her enthronization in the religious tradition constitutes hegemony of the colonization imaginary. Nevertheless, in the context of the celebration-like religious practices emerge folkloric expressions (music, dance, gastronomy, among others), that today belong to the symbolic resistance of the popular culture, that not only rescue the ethnical mixture, but also give relevance to the hegemony of the native and the African.
