LOS PAÑAMANES O LA RESIGNIFICACIÓN DEL MITO Y LA LEYENDA COMO VALORES IDENTITARIOS

Abstract

Este ensayo analiza la novela Los pañamanes desde la perspectiva de cómo la declaratoria de puerto libre (poder adquirir mercancías sin pago de aranceles) que hace el gobierno colombiano de las islas de San Andrés, Providencia y Santa Catalina (Islas de San Gregorio y Fortuna en la novela), afecta profundamente la identidad sociocultural de los isleños, al cambiar, de un modo intempestivo y sin medir consecuencias, una economía de autoabastecimiento, basada principalmente en el agro y la pesca, por una economía fundamentada en el comercio y el turismo continental y de otras latitudes que se desgranó sobre las islas. Se estudia cómo los isleños intentan preservar sus valores identitarios, ya per-meados por el sincretismo afroanglocaribeño, a partir de la leyenda del pañamán (Spanish Man, el intruso continental) y otros núcleos mítico- legendarios y mágicos pero, al mismo tiempo, se observa cómo, de todos modos, el yo isleño-raizal termina asimilando al otro continental, en un proceso de múltiples tensiones que aún no termina.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, we analyze the novel Los pañamanes from the perspective how the declaration of free port (to acquire merchanises without paying tariffs) that the Colombian government makes of St. Andrew, Old Providence and Catalina Island’s (Islas de San Gregorio y Fortuna, in the novel) terribly affects the sociocultural identity of the islanders when changing unexpectedly and without measuring the consequences, an economy of self-supplying based mainly on the agriculture and the fishing, for an economy based on the commerce and the continental and foreign tourism that arrived to the islands. We also study how the islanders try to preserve their identity values, already formed in an AfroAnglo-Caribbean syncretism, from the legend of pañamán (Spanish Man, the continental intruder) and other mythical-legendary and magical nuclei. At the same time, we observe how the island ego ends up assimilating the other continental one in a process of multiple tensions that is not over yet.
