Abstract

The article studies the rise in the military hierarchy of individuals who participated in the armed forces during the Thousand Days War (1899-1902). Thus, it is argued, in the first place, that military promotions in the midst of war occurred much faster than in periods of peace and, secondly, the military partially obtained a series of compensations that favored their life in the campaign. To answer these concerns, quantitative and qualitative documentation from the General Archive of the Nation (Colombia) was consulted, press and combatant memories and a prosopography database was built that has more than 13,000 records distributed in the Zotero software. This allowed us to work with a more solid social historical base than those that have prevailed in previous historiographical representations.
